GOLD + Christmas Art Launch Next Week!

GOLD

When I was in my early twenties, I loaded all my worldly possessions and my dog, Colby, into an old Cincinnati Bell panel van and took off to drive across the country to California.

I took several weeks, exploring old mud shacks on the open plains, Rocky Mountain streams, adobe cliff ruins, being in four states at once in a downward dog, and more.

The month was October and I remember following a narrow mountain road up into the Rockies in Colorado until it deadended at a rock slide.

I pitched camp next to a rambling brook and slept under a concrete picnic table that happened to be next to the mountain creek.  And I still remember the brilliant, sparkling, gold leaves of the aspens shimmering against the clear, cerulean blue sky.  And the still, quiet, silence that is almost impossible to find anymore.

This fall, here in Brown County, reminded me of that trip to California, in the Rockies with the aspens.  Here, the hickories were the same brilliant, sparkling, gold lit up by the sun against a clear, azure blue sky.  Gold has been the predominant color this fall.

The pure, silent, quiet, when deep in the forest, that is so hard to find, is ubiqutous here in Yellowwood Forest.

There’s also “gold in them there hills” here in Brown County.  Real gold.  I remember buying a gold pan at the Gatesville General Store way back when.  As part of my purchase, for a small fee, an enterprising young man gave instructions on how to pan for gold and guaranteed finding some flecks in Salt Creek.

Gold, rubies, diamonds and stunning geodes are all over Brown County, part of the moraine pushed ahead by the glaciers and left behind when they stopped and melted.  The hills are truly magical out here.

I love to paint that magic.

The gold leaves have now turned to rusts and dull oranges against a mystical, gray violet background of hills and hollars.

The leaves have, mostly, fallen to ground, rustling and crunching loudly when I walk my three mile trail, daily, with my dogs, out in Yellowwood Forest.

While named for the Yellowwood tree, it is true to it’s name with the golden yellow colors of this autumn.
